    Get PDF
It is a common practice these days for general public to use various micro-blogging platforms, predominantly Twitter, to share ideas, opinions and information about things and life. Twitter is also being increasingly used as a popular source of information sharing during natural disasters and mass emergencies to update and communicate the extent of the geographic phenomena, report the affected population and casualties, request or provide volunteering services and to share the status of disaster recovery process initiated by humanitarian-aid and disaster-management organizations. Recent research in this area has affirmed the potential use of such social media data for various disaster response tasks. Even though the availability of social media data is massive, open and free, there is a significant limitation in making sense of this data because of its high volume, variety, velocity, value, variability and veracity. The current work provides a comprehensive framework of text processing and analysis performed on several thousands of tweets shared on Twitter during natural disaster events. Specifically, this work em- ploys state-of-the-art machine learning techniques from natural language processing on tweet content to process the ginormous data generated at the time of disasters. This study shall serve as a basis to provide useful actionable information to the crises management and mitigation teams in planning and preparation of effective disaster response and to facilitate the development of future automated systems for handling crises situations

Mental Health in India: Cultural Perception

    Get PDF
Culture plays a vital role in impacting our personality and psychological development. It is also culture that affects our perception about everything that exists within and outside it. Mental health is one of such things that is highly influenced by culture and the way it is perceived is highly denotative of the culture one is a part of. Indians, for example are still very conservative with respect to mental health. Apart from the metropolitan cities which show some progress in understanding and treating mental illnesses, there is no or very less awareness about mental health, psychological disorders and their treatment in the country. Experiences of stigma and discrimination are not uncommon for the people suffering from psychological disorders. People going through these have to deal with negative reactions from their own family members, neighbors, friends and colleagues which makes them either be in denial about the illness or not being able to disclose what they are going through, to anyone. This, in turn, leads to feelings of alienation and negative self image. Mental illness has also been found out to be one of the leading causes of suicides in India

    Get PDF
Abstract: A total of 104 laboratory model tests on a square footing subjected to eccentrically inclined loads supported by sand reinforced with randomly distributed polypropylene fibers were conducted in order to compare the results with those obtained from unreinforced sand and with each other. For conducting the model tests, uniform sand was compacted in a test box at one particular relative density of compaction. The effect of percentage of reinforcement used, thickness of the reinforced layer, angle of inclination of load to vertical and eccentricity of load applied on various prominent factors such as ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt were investigated. An improvement in ultimate load, vertical settlement, horizontal deformation and tilt of foundation was observed with an increase in the percentage of fibers used and thickness of reinforced sand layer under different inclinations and eccentricities of load. A statistical model using non-linear regression analysis based on present experimental data for predicting the vertical settlement (sp), horizontal deformation (hdp) and tilt (tp) of square footing on reinforced sand at any load applied was done where the dependent variable was predicted settlement (sp), horizontal deformation (hdp) and tilt (tp) respectively

Background: Introduction-carcinoma of cervix is the commonest cancer in Indian women. It constitutes 14%of the total population above age of 50 years. Atrophic changes in the genital tract causes problems in Pap smear as well as in the colposcopy. Methods: This is prospective observational study conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology of SGRDIMSR, Sri Amritsar, which comprised 30 cases of postmenopausal women referred for colposcopy. Inclusion criteria were complaints of post-menopausal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, post coital bleeding, an abnormal PAP smear, an unhealthy-looking cervix. Women with history of any surgery on the cervix in the past three months or with obvious cervical cancer were excluded. Results: Patient with age group of 44-70 years were included, and maximum number of patients had complaint of post-menopausal bleeding (50%). 9 (30%) patients were positive for malignancy on histopathology, while with 9 (30%) false positive patients on colposcopy. Problems encountered while performing colposcopy includes cervix flushed with vagina, atrophy of introitus, bleeding from the cervix and relaxed vaginal walls. Use of various corrective measures were helpful to overcome the problems of colposcopy. Conclusions: It is an essential part of cervical screening programme, but it has some limitations and pitfalls which can lead to error in the diagnosis

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix is an exceedingly rare tumor. It is malignant mesenchymal tumour of smooth muscle origin. We report a case of 15-year-old adolescent girl who presented with complain of excessive bleeding per vaginum off and on since 3-4 months and was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma of cervix. Patient was advised further management but father refused as according to them when bleeding has stopped completely then what is the need of further treatment. In this article we want to highlight the points: what is prognosis and survival of such patient whose mass was removed completely and patient is not willing for further treatment inspite of knowing the aggressive nature of tumor and if hysterectomy is the answer what about the reproductive outcome in such young girls and what is the prospect of uterine transplant surgery.

Effect of Sodium Carbonate Concentration in Calgon on Hydrometer Analysis Results

    Get PDF
Calgon (a combination of sodium hexametaphosphate and sodium carbonate) has proved to be the most effective dispersing agent in determining the grain size distribution of fine-grained soils by means of the hydrometer analysis. Previous research on the effect of the sodium hexametaphosphate content of dispersing agents on the clay contents showed that the addition of sodium carbonate to sodium hexametaphosphate increases its dispersing effectiveness. Hence, Calgon 35:7 was used /recommended by many researchers/methods and proved to be the most effective dispersing agent. Although previous work focusing on the effect of varying the concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate in Calgon has been reported, the effect of the concentration of sodium carbonate in Calgon has not been assessed and reported. For this reason, in this investigation a series of hydrometer test analyses were conducted using the 152H and ASTM 152H: E100 hydrometers with Calgon in ratios of 35:0, 35:20 and 35:30.  It was observed that with any increase in sodium carbonate content beyond 7 grams, the percentage clay content actually decreased tremendously in the case of hydrometer 152H. However, for the other hydrometer, Calgon (35:0) proved to be most effective combination. Thus, the increase in the sodium carbonate content in Calgon, beyond 7 g/ litre, is not recommended

Background: Engagement of head is the most important event in labor which decides obstetric outcome. Floating head in primigravida at term is considered an important obstetric risk factor. Cephalopelvic disproportion, occipito-posterior position and deflexed head should be suspected in most cases of floating head. Present study was conducted to determine the outcome of labor in primigravida with floating head at term. The primary objectives of the study was to analyse the progress of labor, need of medical and surgical interventions and fetomaternal outcome. The secondary objective was to find out the rate of caesarean section for floating head in all situations whether elective or emergency in labor. Methods: This study was conducted in department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology SGRDIMS and R, Sri Amritsar on 100 primigravida subjects with floating head at term admitted through OPD admissions for induction of labor /spontaneous labor or referred from outside directly in early labor. Results: In present study the mean age was 24.95±3.01 years. The youngest case was 19 years old and eldest being 32 yrs old. The mean height was 151±3.41. At the time of admission 21% of cases had floating head, 55% cases were at -3 station, 17% of cases had -2 station, with only 7% of cases had -1 station.  56% of women delivered by caesarean section, 8% by forceps assisted vaginal delivery and 36% by normal vaginal delivery. The mean duration of labor was more in free floating and -3 stations in comparison to -2, or -1 stations. The need for augmentation was more in higher head stations.  Mean birth weight was 2.84±0.31, it was more in higher fetal stations in comparison to lower fetal stations. No significant maternal and fetal morbidity was seen. There was no significant difference in the Mean APGAR score of higher head stations in comparison to lower fetal stations. Conclusions: Primigravida with floating head at term and during labor should be managed cautiously. By proper monitoring and maintenance of partogram most of these cases deliver vaginally and without any maternal and fetal morbidity. The attitude of watchful expectancy and timely intervention will be used in all cases, especially in those appearing to be taking a protracted course

Investment in Virtual Digital Assets Vis-A-Vis Equity Stock and Commodity: A Post-Covid Volatility Analysis

    Get PDF
Virtual digital assets including cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens and decentralized financial asset have been initially used as an alternative currency but are currently being purchased as an asset and hedging instruments. Exponentially growing trading volume witnesses the growing inclination of investors towards these assets, and this calls for volatility analysis of these assets. In this reference, the present study assessed and compared the volatility of returns from investment in virtual digital assets, equity and commodity market. Daily closing prices of selected cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens and decentralized financial assets, stock indices and commodities have been analysed for the post-covid period. Since returns were observed to be heteroscedastic, autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic models have been used to assess the volatility. The results indicate a low correlation of commodity investment with all other investment opportunities. Also, Tether and Dai have been observed to be negatively correlated with stock market. This indicates the possibility of minimizing risk through portfolio diversification. In terms of average returns, virtual digital assets are discerned to be better options than equity stock or commodity yet the variance scenario of these investment avenues is not very rosy. The volatility parameters reveal that unlike commodity market, virtual digital assets have got a significant impact of external shocks in the short-run. Further, the long run persistency of shocks is observed to be higher for the UK stock market, followed by Ethereum, Tether and Dai. The present analysis is crucial as the decision about its acceptance as legal tender money is still sub-judice in some countries. The results are expected to provide insight to regulatory bodies about these assets
